Which is your favourite Harry Potter book?

Book events

Pageturners, the Academy's reading club, meets every Thursday after school in the library. Members from all year groups meet together to read, discuss and take part in all sorts of book related activites. A great opportunity to make friends through the joy of reading!

The Carnegie Medal is awarded every year for the best Children's Book and we always ‘shadow' the award by reading the shortlisted books. We then have our own discussions about the books and vote for Dixon's favourite.

You can read what our students thought about the books at:

Kids Lit Quiz

Each year, in October, we start the process of selecting 8 students to take part in the Kids Lit Quiz. This is a world wide event started originally in New Zealand by charismatic questionmaster, Wayne Mills.

We compete against teams from all over the region for a chance to take part in the UK finals. The first prize is a trip to New Zealand to take part in the World Grand Finals. Dixons have always performed extremely well, but as yet, have not been fortunate enough to get to those elusive World Finals. Maybe this year?

Booktrust Teenage Prize

The shortlist for this prize is announced in September. Students from Y8 to Y13 are invited to read the 6 shortlisted titles and vote for their favourite in November.

Author Visits

worldbookdayDixons
celebrated World Book Day with a visit from the internationally renowned author Bali Rai. He entertained students from Years 7 to 10, sharing his experiences of writing and using extracts from his books, which show a rare insight into the lives of young British Asians.

Bali's style of writing is firmly grounded in the reality that he has seen around him, being raised as a working class Punjabi in Leicester. Bali told students that many of his friends don't read because they think literature says nothing to them about their lives. He writes for them, speaking to them in their own language about situations they can identify with.

Members of Pageturners Reading Club were invited to have lunch with Bali, followed by a book signing session in the Library.
